Based on information from Israel, no fewer than 98 Palestinians have lost their lives while in custody starting from October 2023. A rights monitoring body based in Israel has reported that the true figure is almost certainly considerably greater, because of many of missing people from Gaza.

“While we are presenting proof for a greater figure of fatalities than once estimated, this is not the entire story,” he explained. “We are certain that there are yet detainees who perished in custody that we don’t know about.”

Civilian Casualties

Restricted government records indicates that the majority of Palestinian prisoners from Gaza who died in jail were civilians, according to a simultaneous examination.

An attempt to charge others over a brutal attack involving abuse caused right-wing protests and the arrest of Israel’s top military lawyer, with the accused individuals now demanding that allegations against them be dismissed.

Lack of Accountability

“Despite this large quantity of deaths, over two years no one has been detained,” the official noted. “There are no indictments over any killing.

“During the time these policies remain in effect, each Palestinian individual in confinement is in danger, including the healthy ones, even the youth who have no health problems.”

High-Profile Cases

Some deaths in confinement have been widely reported, for instance a senior medical chief who died in detention after a third of a year in custody.

An inmate incarcerated with the deceased reported that he was led to the courtyard by correctional officers just prior to his demise, visibly injured and unclothed from the lower body. His body remains unreleased to Gaza.

Other prisoners who died in detention in Israel stay unnamed. The prison service and armed services supplied analysts with the figure of deaths in confinement, and limited other details such as the site where they lost their lives, but without the detainees’ identities.

Recognition Difficulties

Regarding 21 occurrences, mostly detainees from Gaza, analysts were not able to connect the few details given by government bodies to a fatality documented by rights organisations, via statements from released detainees or accounts in the news outlets.

The inmates’ next of kin might not have learned about their family members’ fatalities either, as Israel has made it difficult to track Palestinians it is detaining.
