Astronaut Shares Emotional Distress Following Wave of Backlash After Historic Trip
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has publicly detailed her struggle with mental health after facing a relentless barrage of criticism in the wake of a historic all-female space mission.
The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the brief journey to space in the spring, which also included high-profile passengers.
The mission was heavily criticized by some, who questioned its cost and carbon footprint.
Reflecting on the ordeal, Ms. Nguyen, who became the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the vicious response eclipsed her moment under an torrent of sexist abuse.
“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a public message, referring to a supportive conversation from a mission companion in the period after the journey.
She described the press attention and digital reaction as an unprecedented psychological assault.
“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she confessed. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”
Eclipsed by Backlash
Ms. Nguyen, who has conducted studies in female health science and operated research during the mission, said every professional achievement – from her studies and extensive preparation to the historic significance of her heritage – was overshadowed under the avalanche of gendered attacks.
She is most acclaimed for her groundbreaking advocacy championing the cause of victims of sexual violence.
Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was deferred after being assaulted during her college days, leading to a long campaign for accountability.
The Fog Begins to Lift
In the time since fulfilling her dream, she noted the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she expressed gratitude the followers whose kindness pulled her through. “Your support rescued me,” she wrote.
She concluded that amid the criticism, important benefits had come out of the mission, including elevated attention for her women's health research and new advocacy opportunities.
The Historic Journey
The computer-piloted New Shepard rocket lifted off from Texas in the spring, carrying the six-woman crew on a short trip that passed the edge of outer space.
The team of pioneers also comprised experts in multiple disciplines.
