The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans involved in combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders including the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals that were central to campaigns to enact legislation governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the decision.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
