Conservative responses to the limited disclosure of files involving the Epstein case have been mixed, with certain supporters of the previous administration highlighting the prominent presence of Bill Clinton and additional Democrats in photographs, while different voices expressed frustration over how heavy censorship portray former President Trump and Republicans in a negative light.
Justice Department Defends Censorship with Strong Rhetoric
Justice Department representatives justified the heavily censored sections with intense exaggerated language. “At no point in U.S. history has a President or the Department of Justice been this transparent with the American people about such a delicate legal matter,” stated a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who released a detailed memo outlining the censorship procedure.
Questions Prompted by Redactions
While the former president's identity and likeness appear in portions of the materials, the widespread redactions raise serious questions about what may be hidden beneath them. A number of conservative lawmakers immediately called for greater transparency.
“People are raging and disengaging,” posted Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a online statement, Republican Congressman Thomas Massie asserted the redactions violate the statute, and implied that a future Congress may move to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Unfortunately, this file dump grossly fails to adhere to both the spirit and the letter of the law,” he added.
Some Conservative Figures Swing Behind the Disclosure
But, a segment of rightwing commentators and Trump allies came out strongly in support of the administration.
The disclosed materials—from a DOJ led by close Trump ally Pam Bondi—contains hundreds of pages that are completely censored, and numerous of the individuals shown in pictures have their identities obscured.
Yet a few are not, including high-profile individuals like Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The presence of the former president, especially, allowed some rightwing voices to go on the attack.
“It’s pretty rich how the political left wrongly accused President Trump of being a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to release documents that show Bill Clinton swimming nude with a convicted sex offender,” wrote right-wing activist Laura Loomer.
“Recently released Epstein Files reveal Bill Clinton shirtless in a jacuzzi with a female that is not his spouse Hillary Clinton,” wrote lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There is only one explanation Epstein would take pictures of a Commander-in-Chief with a girl in a hot tub: Blackmail.”
Former President Spokesperson Issues Statement
Clinton has repeatedly stated he knew of zero illegal actions by Epstein and has not been accused to have engaged in any wrongdoing. “The White House has not been concealing these files for months only to release them at the last minute on a Friday to shield Bill Clinton,” his spokesperson Angel Ureña said in a statement.
“This is about shielding officials from future revelations, or from what they’ll try and conceal permanently. Therefore they can publicize as many low-quality 20-plus-year-old photos as they desire, but it is not about Bill Clinton. Never has, not ever be,” the statement added.
Overall Rightwing Comment Seems Subdued
Nonetheless, overall comment on the right was relatively muted following the release, especially when juxtaposed against the vociferous calls for transparency that preceded the congressional approval to enact a bill mandating the documents' publication.
Loomer, who recently accepted media access at the Defense Department, had been one of the loudest proponents for a complete disclosure. In February, she criticized the administration broadly and Bondi in particular after a group of conservative influencers were provided physical folders of materials that included little new information.
