Individuals Discontinuing Weight-Loss Injections Regain Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

A recent study suggests that patients who stop using popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Findings released in a leading medical journal shows that while obese individuals can lose a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Individuals purchasing such treatments need to be cognizant of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery suggests a return to pre-treatment mass within about 18 months.

Comparing Therapies

The study, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

The team emphasize that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually see a less rapid weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Understanding the Quick Regain

Doctors propose the mechanism of the drugs is key to understanding the accelerated rebound.

GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls hunger.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could lessen responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Issue?

Medical guidelines advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals argue that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment might need to be long-term.

This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "underscore the long-term nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.

User Accounts

Users who have come off the medication report a intense return of cravings.

"It felt as if something that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," described a patient.

This difficulty is compounded if patients have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Growing Adoption

Survey data indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest remaining high.

  • Adoption is greater among women than males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, clinicians emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and long-term success likely depends on ongoing lifestyle changes.
